There IS an expiration on the invitation, I don't know why I don't make the rules yahoo does. Now if you had already registered and were a member there is a periodic notification to you if you have not updated your profile in 'x' number of days. This does not delete you, does not expire you or any other drastic action it just has you log in and confirm your password. I am sorry if that seems excessive to you but as I said, I don't make the rules yahoo does. If you joined the club you are stillt here. Yahoo security simply wanted to verify who you are. If you never registered, well the invites do have a time limit and that is stated on it. I sent you another one in case you wanted to check it out so far everyone is having a great time there. I hope that answers your questions...I will be out of town for the next few days for a funeral, if there are any other queries during that time please direct them to Kemp (Preston is no doubt a mad man trying to get things organized) who has been doing a wonderful job of organizing chats, speakers and other activities. mysfit mysfit@mindspring.com http://mysfit.home.mindspring.com ################################################################# # To subscribe or unsubscribe to the Rockhoundz List, send mail # # to with the following keys: # # subscribe rockhounds (or) unsubscribe rockhounds # # rockhounds@drizzle.com | http://callisto.golder.com/rockhoundz# ################################################################# ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jul 1999 21:26:17 -0400 From: "Ray Rodebaugh" Subject: RE: rock tripping Cow tipping isn't new. Mines along West Willow Creek, including the Commodore, are posted. Along East Willow Creek there is more latitude for collecting but slim pickings. Dumps along the road up the West Willow appear to be disturbed periodically by forays for road material. Sometimes this exposes or moves better material out of the dumps and close to the road. Picked up a few souvenirs, including a bit of amethyst vein. The drive along the headwaters of the Rio Grande to Creede, and the mine ruins along West Willow Creek are both worth the visit. The town itself is pure Colorado. If you can go as far as Silverton in San Juan County visit the Sunnyside Mine. Reclamation work has left it very accessible, look for excellant massive rhodonite, and good specimens of quartz and manganese minerals. Be prepared for some real 4-wheel driving, especially after a hard rain, even when using county "highways". When John asked a deputy sheriff in Ouray if a particular, well-marked, county road on the map would get us across a range of mountains the answer was "Sometimes. I wouldn't go alone". Turned out the road gets re-established each time someone goes through. If the container is not completely sealed, then the air will lose or gain humidity depending on what the air is outside. The silica gel will absorb as much as it can if the humiditiy inside increases, but be quite reluctant to give any up if the air loses moisture to the outside. Can't remember specifics, but it seems like the range was near 0 to about 90%RH. A special display could be made with a recess for a container of the salt solution that would basically last forever once the RH stabilized (and assuming a temperature that doesn't vary too much!). If sterilized, you wouldn't have to worry about mold or algae with the solutions. The CRC Handbook of Physics and Chemistry should have a table with the %RH of the saturated salt solutions. Martin II" Subject: RE: Displaying Hygroscopic Minerals - How to Show Off my Chalcophyllite Henry is correct as usual. My 55th edition CRC handbook of Chemistry and Physics gives the list on Page E-46 with good old table salt (NaCl) providing only 30.5% humidity at 16.4 degrees C. To get higher humidities (up to 98% !) you have to go to more exotic salts like KBr (84% humidity at 20C), (NH4)2SO4 (81% humidity from 20 to 30 deg C), and CuSO4.5H2O (98% humidity at 20 C). There is quite a long list provided but I wonder how many of them can readily be purchased at your local drug store or hardware store? I also wonder what the safety hazards are with the various compounds? Anyone have any suggestions or specific experience?
