Observer today. EMERALD FAILS TO RECEIVE MININUM BID Statesville,N.C. Dec. 8th The sparkle of a huge N.C. emerald failed to turn enough heads at a New York auction. The 18.8 carat "Carolina Queen" drew a high bid Thursday of $460.000, which was below the minimum auction officials set for the stone. The emerald, which was cut from a 72 carat uncut crystal dug up at an abandoned mine in Alexander County in 1998, is owned by a group of investors, sold by Statesville jeweler Rick Gregory. "We're not going to sell it at this point", Gregory said from New York city. "we're really disappointed". The Carolina Queen is considered by many gem experts to be the rarest combination of size and quality ever produced in the U.S. Gregory and others earlier said they were'nt sure how much the gem would fetch--only that it would likely sell for more than the $500.000 received last year for a smaller 7.8 carat emerald that came from the same uncut crystal. "With the smaller gem going for $500.000 we couldn't let this one go for only $460.000," said Lisa Jones of Antiquorium Inc., the New York auction house handling the sale. One leading expert on gems said the market for rare stones such as the Carolina Queen is depressed, especially in the U.S. The gem had been dispalyed in New York, Bahrain and Beverly Hills, Calif. in the past month, before putting it up for auction Thurs. afternoon. Antiquorum will see if more attractive bids trickle in over the next few days. The investors will discuss their options if no new bids come in. How about it folks? Got any extra $$$ lying around?
