After reading some of the posted mail I would like to say to everyone, please do not be surprised about this real life eye opening experience--eBay!! Just ask someone who has worked retail about selling to the real world. Or have any of you been school teachers and dealing with the personalities of the young and the restless and their parents? Been shopping lately or driving on the freeway? Ah, there are answers to the eBay way of life. And what about the constant poles that support a percentage as high as 20% of the American people who believe Elvis is alive & in assisted living in Michigan or the earth is visited by Aliens looking for sex slaves. Ebay seems to be proof that 25% of the population is on the loose! When I was working retail I would say one out of five customers had some kind of "counter culture" attitude or questionable emotional expression. When I was teaching I would say easily one out of five students had emotional problems and needed counseling. Dealing with parents the rating was higher. I would say one out of four. Well, back to how to deal with the exchange of rocks and minerals. Every retail business has a bad check policy, the percentage of money that must be counted out as bad debt for non payment. It's business, it is the reality of business. The best way to avoid problems is to understand and keep repeating the eBay mantra, buyer beware. That also means seller beware. If it will help subs of this group, this same dialogue is being repeated in every other group I know on eBay. This is the new world of buying and selling. Oh, by the way, which of the one out of five are you?? Happy Holidays!! For the most part the entire rockhound commnity is fairly straight forward and honest; unfortunatley, there is a small percentage of crooks on both sides, just like in every other trade/busines/hobby. It's too bad you got burned; hope eBay does something if you pursue that. I've surprised at many of the messages here about eBay, some people don't seem to understand that eBay is no different than any other sale: both sides are required to live up to to stated facts, agreements, etc. It is no different that way than if the sale was in a store downtown. Having just put my first item on eBay, I've been reading these messages carefully and doing a lot more looking at minerals for sale there. This exchange has been quite an education. I have been selling on Ebay for over 2 years and have never been stiffed. I have had wonderful experiences with buyers and sellers alike. I did receive things that weren't what I thought they were, but by and large the good has more than made up for the few "bad deals". I have never recieved or given bad feedback. My only comment is buyer beware. If in doubt, always contact the seller before bidding. If selling, use Paypal so you can take credit cards, or don't send out the merchandise until their check clears. It's not rocket science, just common sense. Yes there are alot of shysters out there and you need to be careful. I may be a little biased, but I think in general the rockhounding community has a high percentage of honest dealers. Don't let a few bad apples spoil the E-bay experience. It's a heck of a way to make some money on an enjoyable hobby. Ben Hyman (AKA Lapidarian on E-Bay) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Dec 2000 00:57:27 -0500 From: Kreigh Tomaszewski Subject: Salmon Creek (Pseudo)coprolites Revisited Not too long ago there was a long thread on this list about (Pseudo)coprolites from Salmon Creek. The only concensus was that the specimens from this locality were not real coprolites, and that the their formation was still unexplained. I just acquired my first specimens from this locality via a trade (Thanks Ron!!!!!). A picture may be worth a thousand words, but seeing the real specimen makes a big difference. I think I can add something to this discussion. Please stay with me as I get around to my point... Moqui marbles are concretions of iron and usually have a sandstone center stained red or yellow from iron. The Navaho Sandstone formation that produces Moqui Marbles was laid down at the beginning of the Jurassic era approximately 190 million years ago. Moqui Marbles probably formed at a time when the original sand dunes, that later became the Navaho formation, were under a sea. The iron in the marbles was probably from unstable Limonite, which forms a gel under pressure (significant depth implied). Volcanic venting produced bubbles in the Limonite gel, heat converted the Limonite to stable Hematite and iron, which entrapped sand from the seabottom environment, and hardened from cooling as it rose towards the surface. Moqui Marbles are found in areas where the Navaho Sandstone formation has nearly eroded away and is again forming sand dunes. After weathering out of the sandstone they are wind polished. These 'fossil bubbles' are a real geological oddity. The Pseudocoprolites from Salmon Creek sure look like slightly squashed, and freshly broken from matrix (not polished), clusters of Moqui Marbles, but perhaps not with quite as high an iron content. Could the Pseudocoprolites from Salmon Creek also be fossil bubbles? My Moqui Marble specimen is actually a (somewhat rare) double (anyone have some singles for sale?). And if you move a little ways from Salmon Creek, to the White River Tree Farm, you find similar shaped rock that turns out to be Thunder Eggs. Could a similar shape imply a similar formation, with hydrothermal replacement of the 'bubble' afterwards to make 'eggs' (and maybe something more like marl than sand for an environment)? Is it possible that Moqui Marbles, Salmon Creek Pseudocoprolites, and Thunder Eggs all share a similar formation process, but have a different end result because of differences in either iron concentration, or original depth of formation? Does anyone have any reasons why not? Or a better explanation of the formation of Moqui Marbles, Salmon Creek Pseudocoprolites, or Thunder Eggs?
