As to insurance. Insurance costs roughly 1200.00 for 500,000 and 1495.00 for 1,000,000 dollars of coverage per year for a mine. The mine can allow people in and they will be covered as well as any thing like a cellar that cracks in a neighbors house ect. As to waivers, I can not pull ours up quickly, but they are useful but not in the eyes of the insurance company. A person can show intent to be responsible and as you have said if the mine owner is negligent in some respect then there may be cause for a law suit, but the first line of the waiver says mines can be dangerous places......So a person can in effect release the landowner or miner of liability almost completly as some dangerous and I would say, other than leaving explosives around which is gross negligence, most dangerous situations are inherint in mining and should be expected. I would also mention that MSHA recommends to hobby miners to have a two or three minute talk on safety before anyone enters the mine. Two cents done. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 May 2000 07:57:13 +1000 From: Les Subject: Re: What Minerals Are Near You? Those that don't know already, I live in Geelong, South of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Nothing really exciting mineral wise is found around here but we do have a few. There are some small quartz xls found in some of the creeks about 50km away but any good areas are not acessed to the public so we have to make do. There are also a few quarries about an hours drive away that have some nice zeolites as I found out recently. I did a recon type trip & came back with some brilliant micros of aragonite sprays, wasn't there long so I expect there will be biiger specimens thee too along with chabazite, calcite & thomsonite. Just a few things from my corner of the world :-) Les. - -- - ------------------------------------------- Ewok's Homepage http://www.netlink.com.au/~lerock Prim email: mailto:lesrock@dingoblue.net.au Sec email: mailto:lerock@netlink.com.au - ------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 May 2000 21:40:36 EDT From: Gemelbaite@aol.com Subject: landowner liability law I am not sure if anyone knows but in Maine there is a law called the Landowners Liability Act which says that anyone entering property (private) for recreational purposes assumes all liability. It was really written for snowmobilers and hunters but covers anyone and it does not neccesarily matter if a fee is charged either. This is the way to change things. The state acts and people can be assured of a sence of safety. The real reason places are closed 1. to much bother trying to control who comes and goes, and control what people are up to (ie. drug use, blasting, horsing around with kids and groups of adults that are busy ) 2. people get in the way if it is a working area becasue they want to get what is best and easiest. There are a lot of ways people get in the way other than this even though it is great fun having them over many people are not so tolerant. 3. stealing , poaching and working the area like a mine with out permission. 4. a lot of people are really rude and one rotten apple spoils..... Getting sued has only been mentioned ot me once by a company at that, never by an individual as a reason why people would not be allowed ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 May 2000 23:05:53 -0400 From: Don Subject: Re: Mine Collecting This is certainly better than mine! Hi Tim! Hal Currie's site is a great one if you're interested in Scotland! Go to: http://www.curriehj.freeserve.co.uk/ Good luck with your project! It sounds like quite an undertaking. All the best, Kevin www.kcminerals.com PS Maybe when you're done you can add a links page including all of the other sites you find, and they could reciprocate. What a great source of integrated information that would be! - -----Original Message----- From: tjokela To: rockhounds@drizzle.com Date: Tuesday, May 16, 2000 5:01 PM Subject: top locality/state/province/country mineralogy websites? >I'm looking for non-commercial websites dedicated to the mineralogy of one >locality, state, province, or country. > >Examples I know of are: > >Favre's site on Saint-Hilaire, >Sorrell's site on Australia, >Dillen's site on Belgium, >Van Dommelen's site on Nova Scotia > >I'm sure there are others, please let me know of your favorites! > >(I'm working on a site dedicated to the minerals of the province of Ontario, >Canada, and am interested in what other folks are doing.) > >Thanks for any help! > >Tim Jokela Jr >tjokela@execulink.com >http://www.element51.com > > >################################################################# ># To subscribe or unsubscribe to the Rockhoundz List, send mail # ># to with the following keys: # ># subscribe rockhounds (or) unsubscribe rockhounds # ># To post, send mail to # >################################################################# ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 May 2000 23:39:51 -0400 From: "Bobo" Subject: RE: Mine Collecting Sure Don - that was my intent. I printed up some copies with blank spaces for the county/state/location and carry them with me. Though this doesn't guarantee access to an active mine or quarry, having one in hand when you knock on the mine foreman's door will usually get you invited into the office for a chat vs. the "bum's rush" from the property, as most of them are genuinely impressed by your foresight and preparedness. The larger companies will usually want to send a copy to corporate HQ to see if it'll fly, and your request will be at the mercy of the whims-n-moods of their 'legal eagles' (o: You might even send a formal letter to the company with a copy of the release attached..... - -----Original Message----- From: owner-rockhounds@drizzle.com [mailto:owner-rockhounds@drizzle.com]On Behalf Of Don Sent: Tuesday, May 16, 2000 11:06 PM To: rockhounds@drizzle.com Subject: Re: Mine Collecting This is certainly better than mine!
