I first went out to Emerald Creek and Shorty's 27 years ago, it was sh#*y then, more like the aftermath of a mortar attack then a government organized digging area. It seems that it hasn't changed. I can't believe there is a square inch that hasn't been dug 5 times over. But, there are plenty of great places to dig Idaho star garnets, unfortunately for reasons only the Forest Service knows these other locations Are all closed, Cats paw creek, 281 Trail (absolutely the finest location of translucent pale plumb colored, 6 rays), Michael Schramm in Boulder has the best star garnet I Have ever seen and I have seen thousands (it's a 281 trail we got from the Tekoa Stop and Rock shop when we moved it to Moscow). There are lots of places in the Floodwood State forest as well, that's where the Garnet Queen's mine is. Joel Chavez, Dave Cochran and I played hooky from Structural and Igmet one spring afternoon and went up diggin' wild garnoots. We plowed through axel deep slush and were the first guys onto the stream early in the thaw, took about an hour to fill up 2 1/2 gallons of a 5-gallon bucket. I'll always remember Joel sticking his arm to the shoulder into this ice-cold hole on the stream and pulling out this monster, laughing the proverbial pirate laugh and shakin' it at us and saying Ha! how about that S*&! Boys, two seconds later Dave pulled out a bigger one still. I still have a crystal the size of an orange on my desk as a paperweight that was a good days dig.... An interesting request, can anybody help? I am trying to get some celadonite from the Queen Charlotte Islands for an exhibit on pre-contact paint used on totem poles. Ream" Subject: Re: Digging Star Potatoes...... (fwd) I received the information from the FS today on the garnet project in the Emerald Creek, Idaho area. What they are looking for is input to a pending Draft Environmental Impact Statement on garnet mining in the area. They expect to have this DEIS done in Spetember 2001. They are proposing to resolve 10 pending lease applications for garnets and garnet sands and continue a recreational garnet digging area. Creeks involved in the study include Emerald, Wood, Hidden and Catspur Creek. They figure the present digging area on the gulch at Trail 281 will be mined out in 2-5 years (of course some people have expressed their feeling that it is already mined out). If you are interested in seeing the DEIS, you can get on the mailing list by contacting the FS at 208-245-4517. They will put much of the information on a web site (I don't have the url handy, but search on Idaho Panhandle National Forests in September). As to what Chris wrote below; there were some wild digging times back in the late '50s and the '60s. I first saw Emerald Creek in the spring of 1968; when we drove in the area was amazing, pretty well covered with commercial diggers who had already been there for several weeks. There were campers and old beat up trailers parked all over and boxes and barrels (yes 50 gallon barrels) of garnets sitting around. The resource was plentiful. At that time, it was private land and the timber company wasn't doing much about the garnet digging, although they were getting rather tired of it, which is one reason they traded the land to the FS. That's where the digging problem started. The reason it was closed, and now operates under a special permit (a special law), and the reason Catspur Creek, and others are closed, is no secret. The trades are generally done under the Weeks law, and that law requires that all minerals be removed under a lease only. It has no provisions for any mineral removal without a lease, not even hobby collecting. Rockhounds wanted to continue collecting at Emerald Creek, so the FS worked with Congress and a law was passed providing for the dayly permits--short term special leases. Surprisingly, most of the garnet areas that are on National Forest lands in the region are on lands received in trades under the Weeks law. I've always thought it was kind of odd that just about every creek or site I hear about falls on this Weeks law land and is not open to rockhounding. Anyway, that's the situation with star garnets in Idaho these days. And Western Washington just had an earthquake, now scaled up to 7.0 on the Richter scale, centered about 10 miles N or Olympia and at a depth of 30 miles. I didn't feel anything here It was about when I first logged onto this list and that us often an earthshaking experinece itself, but 35 miles west in the Spokane area some people felt it and saw their plants swaying and bouncing. Damage in the Olympia-Tacoma-Seattle area varies, mostly not severe, but those old brick buildings have the their problems. Heavy on my mind at the time were all those reports I read on the potential for catastrophic liquefaction here in the valley. For a moment I thought I was going to become a part of the Osceola Mudflow. We got power back about 5:00PM. A few rock specimens fell from a shelf, but nothing too serious. I understand there are several small scale landslides around the state. The magnitude has been revised based on further processing of available data. The preliminary mechanism for this earthquake is tensional (normal) faulting in the subducting (downgoing) Juan de Fuca Plate, caused by bending of the plate. Damage and injuries have occurred in the Olympia-Seattle area. The earthquake was felt as far away as Salt Lake City. This earthquake is located in the same general area as a magnitude 7.1 earthquake on April 13, 1949. In terms of energy released, today's earthquake is about one-third as strong as the 1949 quake. The location for this earthquake was furnished by the Geophysics Program, University of Washington, Seattle.
