Warren Museum of Fluorescence Greetings all, On behalf of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum Foundation, Ogdensburg, NJ, I am pleased to announce the new website of the Thomas S. Warren Museum of Fluorescence (TSWMF): http://sterlinghill.org/warren This is the official museum of fluorescence recognized by the Fluorescent Mineral Society (FMS). Please explore, learn, and enjoy! The museum is funded by, and is on the grounds of, the Sterling Hill Mining Museum Foundation; yet it is independently curated and staffed. We wish to thank the FMS for their sponsorship and support; and of course we thank all the generous donors and volunteers who make this museum a reality. Special thanks also to the curator of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum, Steve Misiur, who was a helpful guide in the creation of the page. Acknowledgements to Herb Yeates, best known for his Franklin/Sterling Hill website at http://www.simplethinking.com/ for creating this page. The TSWMF will soon be home to the Ultraviolet Luminescence Research Center (name tentative), a small but soon-to-grow lab dedicated to the observation and recording of fluorescent and phosphorescent responses in minerals and other materials. The center will feature four UV Systems, Inc., TripleBright lights, in shortwave, midrange, and two longwave frequencies. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 17:29:40 -0700 (PDT) From: Aaron Fox Subject: [FWD] Re: Michigan Gold Question -- Answer From: MPBMINCOLL@aol.com Message-ID: Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 11:15:34 EDT Subject: Re: Michigan Gold Question -- Answer To: rockhounds@drizzle.com Dear Kreigh: My name is Mike Basal, I received your question (below) regarding the unknown black needle mineral from John Jaszczak at MTU, Houghton, MI. I have a serious interest in any mineral(s) related too and Gold in Michigan. > I received a couple rocks for Father's Day. My oldest kid picked them up > along a road near Negaumee. My first reaction was massive > goethite, but the streak is wrong. Any suggestions? > > Kreigh Tomaszewski First, I must say Congratulations on the find! I am impressed! Without seeing the mineral and, considering the abundance of "Manganese" mineralization in the old Negaunee area Iron Mines, My guess is your "black" massive / needle mineral is Manganite (or a manganese mineral of some variation). I am very interested in the fact that you have Gold on the associated Quartz vein. Would there be any possibility of getting it sent to either myself or George Robinson (Curator of the Seaman Mineral Museum) at MTU Houghton, MI for Verification? George is currently in the final stages of completing a major update to the "Mineralogy of Michigan" book. This would be very welcome information. You, of course, would get the mineral piece back. I will be away later this week through next on a mineral related venture. So there may be a slight delay in e-mail & USPS mail for this brief time. My address and George Robinson's address is below; Hope to hear back from you. Sincerely, Michael P. Basal P.O.
