What a bunch of sociology majors perceive is of little importance.

It is of importance and relevance if it explains why there are proportionally more women in those fields. Or have you forgotten that was what this thread was all about to begin with?

Winter time is the best time for beards IMO. I think the number of beards is pretty much typical of the general population unless you catch a rock hound or geologist coming home from a field trip. The new (local language) word is often adopted by other languages as a new word too. Science tends to be global so the new name is adopted for the newly discovered thing by almost everyone who might be interested. But you are correct in noting the same spelling in different languages often leads to different pronunciation. > > except "kodak" that is good example, I'll have to make a xerox of it. ;-} > > PMH > > "The penalty for an ecological education > is to live in a world full of wounds." > - Aldo Leopold > > ################################################################# > # Rockhounds@drizzle Mailing Alias: rockhounds@drizzle.com # > # Web: http://www.drizzle.com/~afox/rockhounds/ # > # Subscription Services: majordomo@drizzle.com # > ################################################################# ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jan 2002 19:56:40 -0800 From: "David W. In tallying the responses I find that (male) geologists very much tend to have beards (especially in academia). The trend is less true for rockhounds, but still is a majority. Big cities tend to be an exception. Your mileage may vary. And yes, I have a beard too. From: David Guin > > (P.P.S., the real reason was that my wife wanted to see what I looked like without it, and she thought I would look a lot younger/better without it!) > > Well! Do you? Inquiring minds want to know. You bet I do! (At least she says so... and so did a lot of friends). She says I look 10 years younger. I think when I first grew the beard, it was to look older & more distinguished---and because it seemed like the thing to do, after I spent a summer out doing field work. I think the main reason I kept it for so many years was just laziness--didn't have to shave every day, just trim it down a bit every couple of weeks! Looking at "before" pictures now, Jane says I looked like Ted Kazinski (how do ya spell that??)--which I kind of did! Which brings me to the next comments, from Lanny Ream, >>Nearly 100% of the geologists/rock people I see every day have beards--but that's just me. ... >>Thinking of those in the Northwest who I collect with on occasion, a few years ago, perhaps 1/3 had beards, >>now, probably less than 1/4 or 1/5. ... However, geologists do tend to have a higher percentage of men with >>beards. In the past it appeared to be maybe 1/3, but now it's much lower. :-)> This brings two questions to mind... (1) So then, am I really part of a trend, in getting rid of beards? Lanny seems to think there is such. And, (2) Hey Lanny, why of COURSE, nearly everyone that YOU see has beards. Everybody knows that EVERYONE, rockhounds or not, who lives like you do up in the mountains of northern Idaho are bearded survivalists who live in cabins without electricity, never pay taxes, drink creek water, and live on poached elk.
