If that is the purpose of the IMA, then why do we have this spelling problem? :-) Everyone should use the spelling that the IMA designates. Ok, I think that's the way I pronounce goethite also. I said a soft G sound but maybe I meant a hard G sound. (I was just trying to differentiate it from the english J sound as in "jump".) Pronounciation is a difficult issue; but I'd expect they could at least standardize the spellings. Science should have a lingua franca. > Lastly, how do all of you pronounce Goethite? I've heard many ways from > people, such as GO-thite, GO-ee-thite, GE-thite, GE-tite, GO-tite and > GER-tite (all of them with a soft-G sound as in the english word "wagon"). Yeesh, what an abomination. In my original post, I forgot to mention goethite as a prime example of the prnounciation problem. I pronounce it the same wau I pronounce the name of its namesake, the poet and mineral collector Goethe; that is, according to the Intemediate Student's Guide to German Grammar, Style, and Usage, the "oe" sound is enunciated "with the lips rounded as to form an 'o', the throat constricted, and the tongue pulled back in the mouth; the sound begins as if saying 'er' but stops just as the mouth begins to close to complete the 'r'." The initial "g" is hard, as in "good," and the "th" is simply a soft "t". I'm really not insufferable when it comes to such details. However, they do have a time and a place. What is most annoying, though, is when I choose to pronounce something as what I believe to be correct--such as "goethite" or "wollastonite"--and people correct me toward the wrong pronounciation! All the best, Don ################################################################# # Rockhounds@drizzle Mailing Alias: rockhounds@drizzle.com # # Web: http://www.drizzle.com/~afox/rockhounds/ # # Subscription Services: majordomo@drizzle.com # ################################################################# ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Jan 2002 13:58:08 EST From: ANNWB2@aol.com Subject: Re: RE: mineral name pronounciation: author's prerogative or English orthography? My understanding of the IMA is that they really don't care how you say it, just as long as it's spelled correctly. The process on voting for a new mineral does include the separate voting on the name itself. The new name shouldn't duplicate an existing name, unless the name is a redefinition of a formerly obsolete name and the name shouldn't be easily confusable with an existing name, etc. If named after a living person, the person needs to give his own approval, etc. There is no retroactive interest in mineral nomenclature and they only consider formal proposals directly submitted to them. Unless quartz goes through a redefinition, it'll never be an IMA-approved mineral. About half of the "accepted" species are not IMA-approved. This is through no fault in the mineral, they were just grandfathered. Gary:

Reasonable I don't know about but Kingsley North carries them.
